Platte Clove Bushwhack, Catskills, NY - 10/7/07

We didn’t have much time in the late afternoon but we decided to take a quick trip over to the edge of Platte Clove, just to the east of the Platte Clove Preserve and near where the old Plattekill Falls Hotel, which we walked past on our way back.

The trip is pretty straightforward and is only about a mile each way from the trailhead on Platte Clove Road. You start out on the Long Path that travels through the Catskill Center’s Platte Clove Preserve (also known as the Old Overlook Road) and then after a bit, cut off into the woods to the east and make your way over to the edge of the clove.

Pretty quickly after leaving the trail you’ll come across the escarpment, which looks almost straight down into Platte Clove.

The view is quite nice with the clove below you, Devil’s Kitchen to your right, Huckleberry Point to your left and the Hudson Valley expanding out from the base of the Clove.

On the way back we followed the edge of the escarpment to catch the views as we made our way back. There are a few open areas here and there and you can catch the occasional glimpse of the opposite of the clove and then as you get further along, views of Kaaterskill High Peak. Then we passed the old hotel site and we were back at the trailhead fairly quickly.
