Hunter Mountain Leanto and Trail Work Marathon - September 12, 2010 - Catskill Mountains, NY
On Sunday, September 12, 2010 a number of volunteers from the Catskill 3500 Club and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference along with staff from the NY Department of Environmental Conservation worked on completing the newly built John Robb Leanto, clearing the trail between the summit of Hunter Mountain and the Devil’s Acre Leanto and moving the privy at the Devil’s Acre Leanto. The group broke up into three separate teams, each tackling a different job.
From the start down in Spruceton valley the volunteers loaded in trucks that made their way to the summit. Everyone stopped at the John Robb Leanto on the way up to install some pegs and then one team stayed behind and finished staining the leanto. They spent most of the day getting stain on the leanto and on themselves. By the end, the leanto was completely stained and they were ready to go home and scrub some stain off.
Another team worked from the summit of Hunter Mountain towards the Devil’s Acre Leanto clearing the trail that had become overgrown. The final team made their way down to the Devil’s Acre Leanto. The privy there had filled up and needed to be moved to a new location. A new hole was dug and the old privy building was moved to its new home.
Both team on top of the mountain finished clearing out the trail between the leanto and the summit on the way back. Then the team at the John Robb Leanto was picked up and we headed back down the mountain.
All in all, an amazing amount of work done in a single day by a dedicated group of trail volunteers.

I did have some time to enjoy the view on top of Hunter and the overlook at the John Robb leanto (one of my favorites in the area)…
