Review: Mountain House Freeze Dried Homestyle Turkey Dinner Casserole

We know, it's hard to get excited about freeze dried food. It's never quite the same as a fresh meal, but in some cases, like with the Turkey Dinner Casserole from Mountain House, after a day of hiking it works and makes for a good dinner.

Turkey Dinner Casserole from Mountain House

When you're hiking and camping, the more simple the dinner, the better -- at least in our book. Mountain House's Turkey Dinner Casserole fits that bill. You just need to boil water, open the pouch, add the boiling water and let it sit for several minutes, stir, sit some more and voila, a turkey dinner in the backcountry.

Sadly, an entire turkey does not come forth as you re-hydrate, but given that in our book turkey, stuffing and veggies leftovers mixed together after Thanksgiving always seem to be a meal that makes everyone feel better, we felt good after enjoying it.

14 grams of protein in a serving (and 2 servings per bag) will help replace what you've hiked off during the day. The lack of artificial flavors, colors and preservatives makes you feel better about what you're eating. Our meal re-hydrated well. It was good to eat and we enjoyed it. Cleanup is easy since the meal is prepared in the bag it comes in and the only cooking you did was boil the water.

Taste wise...you'll know you're not eating fresh leftovers from Thanksgiving, but as far as freeze dried food goes, we thought it was definitely one of the better meals you can have.

For those with milk allergies there is milk in the meal. Clearly the stuffing brings in plenty of gluten so beware if you are gluten intolerant.

Final Thoughts

Made without preservatives or other artificial things you don't need, packing plenty of protein and tasting almost like leftovers the day after Thanksgiving, the Turkey Dinner Casserole from Mountain House will find a place in our camping pantry in the future.
