White Mountains - Exploring the Shelburne Trails and Mount Crag

Mount Crag is a small mountain located north of Route 2 in Shelburne, NH - only a few miles east of Gorham, NH on Route 2 - but one that offers some great views of the White Mountains to the south from its open summit.

The Shelburne Trails are network of trails that run along the small mountains and through the valleys between the Mahoosuc Range to the north and Route 2 and the Androscoggin River in the south. There does seem to be some variability in their locations (hence a recent map is quite helpful, even more so then an app like AllTrails), as the area is actively logged and changes seem to be made on the trails to accommodate the forestry activities.

There are several locations on North Road where trails go off, but the Middle Mountain Trail is the only trail with a dedicated parking area on North Road, making it the easiest to find and the easiest to park at. That’s where Jeff began his hike on this trip. In addition to the loop Jeff did, there are a number of other loops, some smaller and some larger that can be pieced together in this dense network of trails.
