Hiking Mount LeConte, the third highest peak in Great Smoky Mountains National Park that offers amazing views and a grueling climb

Reaching 6,593 feet in elevation, Mount LeConte is the third highest mountain in the Smokies and is a must-do hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Taking the Rainbow Falls Trail up and the Bullhead Trail down is the kind of loop that’ll leave your legs jelly but your heart full. It’s roughly 15 miles of pure mountain magic: waterfalls, views for days, and the kind of nature therapy you didn’t know you needed.

The hike begins at the Rainbow Falls/Cherokee Orchard Trailhead off Cherokee Orchard Road. The first few miles are a steady climb, with the trail hugging LeConte Creek. At about 2.7 miles, you hit the first amazing stop: Rainbow Falls. This 80-foot beauty is perfect for a snack break and a selfie. If you’re lucky and the sun’s out, you might catch the rainbow vibes that give the falls their name.

From there, the trail gets steeper and rockier—welcome to leg day. But trust us, it’s worth it. After 6.7 miles and about 4,000 feet of elevation gain, you’ll roll into the LeConte Lodge area. Take a breather, enjoy the porch at the this unique high-altitude lodge, and then head up to the summit ridge to explore Cliff Tops and Myrtle Point

The Bullhead Trail is your ticket back down to the trailhead, but it doesn't sleep on the views. This 6.4-mile stretch offers epic ridgeline moments and a front-row seat to the Smokies’ regrowth after past wildfires. It’s a cool reminder of nature’s bounce-back game.
