Shady Lake Loop, is a hidden in Arkansas’ Ouachita Mountains for those visiting the Shady Lake Campground and Recreation Area

The Shady Lake Trail in Arkansas’ Ouachita Mountains is a quiet 3.2-mile loop that offers a mix of history, scenery, and classic forest hiking. Starting in the Shady Lake Recreation Area of the Ouachita National Forest, the trail circles the lake, passes the CCC-built Shady Lake Dam, and winds through wooded paths with creek crossings and a few small waterfalls along the way.

Shady Lake Trail Description

The Shady Lake Trail in the Ouachita Mountains is an easy to moderate 3.2-mile loop that starts right from the Shady Lake Campground. It’s a good option for families, leashed dogs, or anyone looking for a quiet day hike. Much of the trail follows the shoreline of the lake, with views of the water, small creek crossings, and the CCC-built Shady Lake Dam.

We started our hike from our campsite on the C-Loop above Saline Creek. From there, the trail climbs a ridge along the lake before dropping back down to the shore. At one point there’s a bench overlooking the water, and soon after the trail reaches the outlet of the lake just below the dam. Flood damage made the creek crossing here a little tricky, so it’s best attempted in low water.

On the far side, the trail briefly follows Polk County Road 64 to an overlook above the lake and dam—an excellent spot for a break. From there, the route dips back down to the shoreline, winds along an inlet, and climbs up and over a ridge before reconnecting with the campground access road. The last stretch loops around the edge of the campground, climbs to a hilltop on a series of switchbacks, then drops back to Saline Creek and the point where we began.

Why We Liked The Shady Lake Trail Loop

The Shady Lake Trail isn’t a big climb or a difficult outing, but it’s a pleasant loop that highlights the best of the Ouachita National Forest—quiet woods, a historic dam, and a peaceful mountain lake.
